THE ROBERT E. LOUP JEWISH COMMUNITY CENTER (JCC DENVER/THE J) COMPLETES PHASE ONE UPGRADES FOR THE MEMBERSHIP IMPROVEMENT PROJECT

DENVER, CO (March 31, 2016) – As a prelude to the transformation of The Robert E. Loup Jewish Community Center (the J) into a state-of-the-art campus under The Membership Improvement Project, the Board of Directors announced the completion of phase one upgrades for the existing facility, located at 350 S. Dahlia Street, Denver CO 80246. For over 90 years, the J has been the centerpiece of Denver’s Jewish community, a vibrant and inclusive family and social gathering place providing exceptional educational, cultural and recreational programs guided by timeless Jewish values. With these upgrades now complete, The Membership Improvement Project moves forward developing best in class, amenity rich, high efficiency facilities to support the J’s award winning, nationally recognized programming.

Completed in March, 2016, the phase one upgrades in excess of $400,000, providing a whole new look and feel to the J’s existing fitness center, common areas and lobby. Upgrades include:

  • A new design and color palette (paint, carpeting, fixtures);
  • Bright, energy-efficient, LED lighting;
  • New colorful and comfortable furnishings in the common areas (lobby);
  • New fitness equipment (spin bikes, racks, exercise equipment, TVs, towels, and more);
  • New water fountains;
  • An improved sidewalk with easier access to the J’s lobby;
  • A new, highly curated art collection, including a welcoming Shofar in the main lobby (by artist James M. Smith) and The Mezzuzot (by artist Batya Rich).

These upgrades will improve the members’ experience during the approximately 12-18 months it will take the J to construct an entirely new, 63,000 sq ft fitness and wellness center on another portion of the existing Dahlia Street site.

“Words can’t describe how significantly these upgrades have enhanced the member experience,” said the J’s interim CEO, Karla Hanlon. ”We’ve gotten excellent feedback from members and staff alike, and our main lobby is now one of the J’s most popular gathering spaces,”

Funded entirely by a generous gift from philanthropist and developer Michael Staenberg, the phase one upgrades will be followed by construction of the new fitness and wellness center, a new aquatic center featuring (four) indoor and outdoor pools, an expanded multi-generational family center, a renovated early childhood education center, and a ‘refresh’ of the MACC (Mizel Arts & Culture Center) under The Membership Improvement Project.

“We felt that it was important to improve the member experience while the capital campaign moves forward,” said Board President Scott Reisch.

“The J has amazing cultural, educational and recreational programs and we want the quality of the facilities to match,” Staenberg stated. “I’d like to see the J become the go-to multi-use facility in Metro-Denver for the entire community, Jews and non-Jews alike, and set an example for JCC’s nationwide.”

Now that these initial improvements are complete, the J will continue on with the capital campaign and The Membership Improvement Project, with construction of the new health and wellness center slated to begin later this year.
