The Jewish Experience in the American Civil War
2:00 – 3:30 pm
Mizel Reception Room
By 1860 there were 150,000 Jews living in the United States. On the eve of the Civil War, Jews had communities in New York, Philadelphia, Boston, St. Louis, New Orleans, Chicago and numerous other cities around the country. When the first shots were fired on Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor, South Carolina, on April 12, 1861, Jews found themselves in the same predicament as most Americans of having the agonizing decision to choose sides. Geography helped make most people’s decision. Those in the North sided with the Union and those living in the South sided with the Confederacy. This presentation by Professor Tish Richard will consider Jewish views towards slavery and abolition, Jewish wartime contributions and the prejudice Jews experienced during the war.
