The Marvel of Music

Live music, tiny audiences, big joy. Altitunes turns every class into a mini concert—creating meaningful moments for babies and their grownups at the JCC.

“Shabbat Shalom (hey!),” “Bim, Bam,” and “Hannukah, Oh! Hanukkah” are universally known and customarily heard year-round at the Staenberg-Loup Jewish Community Center. These songs have an indescribable power to them; they stick in our brains like super glue. They are silly, joyous, and familiar. Although these tunes are considered old hats, little voices breathe new life into them. Music notes reverberate down the hallways, ring in the classrooms, and lift high into the air when our smallest community members croon, “There is a dinosaur knocking at my door,” every Friday morning. Music is a force that educates and connects us across continents and through generations.

Paula Voss, the Director of JCC Denver’s Early Learning School (ELS) explains how music is embedded into every part of the school day – upon entry to the classroom, during transitions, and to welcome Shabbat and other holidays. Paula describes that music creates “a familiarity and signals to the students what’s coming next – when we start singing ‘Here Come Baby Moses,’ it indicates that Passover is coming. Although we may not talk about the ins and outs of the Passover story, the tune combined with the cradling motion teaches the students about the holiday with a developmentally appropriate technique – sound and action!” In addition to driving educational opportunities, music has the power to provoke peace. It is a full body experience, felt in the soul and the physical body. “In one of the new infant classrooms, I saw one of our educators humming while soothing one of the crying infants. It was miraculous – the sound helped regulate the educator, and the vibration soothed the infant,” Paula shared.

If you look closely, this ELS cutie is rocking his custom “La La La Grapes” onesie 🍇—just one of the many songs that’s become part of the shared language of our school and Camp Shai, thanks to joyful, regular song times that follow our kids from the classroom to camp and beyond

Find a Music Program at the JCC

In addition to the Early Learning School, babies and toddlers enjoy music throughout engagement programs at the JCC Denver. Students in Practice Preschool explore musical instruments and songs as part of their daily routine to prepare for preschool, while Music for Babies, Music for Toddlers, and Mixed Aged Music in partnership with Altitunes are devoted solely to singing, dancing, banging on drums, and shaking maracas. Keri Graves, Engagement Program Manager, voices how “the teacher will build themes for each class. For instance, Altitunes teacher provides apple shakers when there is a class during Rosh Hashanah, and we will sing ‘Rocket Ship Run’ when the class is learning about outer space. It’s special that the kids can explore freely through movement and themes.” Another music-only class, Music Preschool Enrichment, is for kiddos three to five years old and provides moments of music education, such as naming and listening to the notes simultaneously.

Music is a true marvel – the repetitiveness teaches us, the tunes calm us, and the familiarity connects us to those halfway across the world. While the words may sound different when spoken in Hebrew,  or English, the meaning is the same:

״יש דינוזואר שמקיש בדלת שלי… והוא רוצה לבלות איתי את השבת

“There is a dinosaur knocking at my door…and he wants to spend Shabbat with me.”
