How the New Lifeguard Instructor Badge Improves Pool Time
Getting into a cool pool on a blazing summer afternoon is pure bliss—but the real enjoyment comes from knowing the watchful eye on the lifeguard stand is the very trainer who certifies all JCC Denver (the J) lifeguards. That trainer is Amanda Spafford, Aquatics Manager. When sharing her experience receiving the American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor (LGI) credential, she says, “The course opened my eyes to how fast rescue science evolves. Now I get to pass those updates straight to our team.”

LGI status shifts Amanda’s role from manager to in-house trainer. She can now certify our lifeguards herself, teach specialized Red Cross classes (such as CPR-AED refreshers), and enforce the industry gold standard of four hours of in-service training per guard each month. One eye-opening tweak she’s already putting into practice includes rescue breaths during CPR, which now occur every six seconds instead of five. “Tiny changes like that are what saves lives,” Amanda notes.
Amanda started working at the J three years ago in search of a job based in community. She loves to hear swimmers swapping vacation stories with guards between their laps. While she is determined to sharpen her and her team’s skills, she embraces the friendly hum of conversation that makes the J feel like home.
In addition to JCC staff, JCC guests will feel this upgrade. “We’re building lifeguards who carry life skills beyond the pool,” she shares, optimistic that patrons will notice the calm confidence displayed by the guards. Though don’t fret! Lifeguards will still happily chat about your grandson’s graduation or that delicious pastrami sandwich you recommend from the new deli in town. Community member relationships with JCC lifeguards are part of both the feeling of community and the safety net.
The JCC pool is a place designed for every age and energy level. And because Amanda’s team trains more rigorously than ever, you can focus on perfecting your backstroke while they focus on swift responses. Safety upgrades like unified rescue protocols, updated rescue breathing, and ongoing emergency drill rehearsals will occur on a regular and continuous basis. This summer, your family only needs to worry about reapplying sunscreen and having fun!
