On Monday, November 4, JCC Denver marked the commencement of construction for the new Strear and Pluss Family Garden, with a groundbreaking ceremony held at 10:00 am. Part of the project will include developing a curated outdoor classroom space for our Early Learning School (ELS) students to explore, play, and learn in. The beautiful outdoor space will feature a memorial for Debra Strear Aleinikoff while also functioning as a respite and recreational area for members of every generation.

During the ceremony, the Strears and Pluss’s were honored with the first groundbreaking, as they dug the earth using rose colored shovels. Ogling in the first row, our preschool aged ELS students were then invited up to share in the hands-on fun, running up to dig dirt in their mini puffer jackets as everyone cheered under the gentle snowfall on a cloudy day that was anything but gloomy.

The first phase of the project– currently underway– includes removing the existing fence, prepping the land, and building hardscapes. The second phase will include adding plant life in spring 2025.  The fence will be replaced with a secure, elegantly designed structure that combines durability with aesthetic charm, allowing light to pass through and vines to grow. The garden was designed by Elevated by Design, with installation by 303 Landscapes. Both partners have worked closely with us throughout the entire planning process, and we are excited for the garden to come to life under their guidance. “It’s been rewarding to collaborate with the team at the JCC on the design,” comments Mike Strear. “The garden will be an exciting form of education and enjoyment for all generations, and an inviting place to gather.”

“This is one of the most important projects we’ve undertaken in a long time because it’s so tangible,” Marci Roper adds, referencing many childhood memories at the J. “Hopefully we’ll revitalize the whole area to draw more people and provide a beautiful spot to honor our sister…and families… it’s a real privilege that we get to do this.” Whether you visit the Strear and Pluss Family Garden to reflect in solitude, work remotely, enjoy live music in our new amphitheater, or celebrate life’s joys, this space is yours to create memories, nurture connections, and embrace each moment.

“Special thanks to the Rose Community Foundation for directing our family to this opportunity and to the enthusiastic and supportive staff at the JCC,” says Mike. “Thanks to the Pluss family for their financial and project support.” Mike also asked to take a moment to celebrate the life of Debra Strear Aleinikoff. “This project would not be possible without Debbie’s commitment to intergenerational programming” referencing her tireless work to enhance the interface of the lives of elders with young children for the community and beyond.
