Join us Under the Sea

It’s not every day that you get to go to your Senior Prom – twice! The JCC team has dreamed up an absolutely magical night on May 11, and we’re excited to be welcoming community members 55+ for a night of dancing, delicious snacks, and memory making.

Read on for a peek into the mind of this event’s creator, Blair Becker!

I recognized the need and opportunity of having our very own “Senior” Prom at the JCC Denver after discussing the benefits of music and dancing for older adults with a One Medical employee. She told me that dancing not only benefits balance, flexibility, and strength, but it also allows for socialization and connection. My job as an Engagement Program Manager is to increase the quality of life for adults and seniors, to provide chances for connection at a time in life when isolation remains ever prominent. I knew Senior Prom was exactly what our community needed.

When discussing this event with a retiree in the community, she said, “I never got to attend my own high school prom. Now I feel like I have some redemption!” This event will benefit those 55 and older, as well as a group of young people in the Jewish community. The Temple Emmanuel 8th grade class will be crafting coral centerpieces, shell boutonnieres, and other colorful décor for the event. Therefore, providing an intergenerational volunteer component to Senior Prom.

When arriving at this Under the Sea formal soiree, expect turquoise and sage tinted balloons welcoming you into a lively room filled with the Beatles and Elvis Presley classics. Remember to pose for a picture with your partner, friends, or siblings at the photo booth after munching on light appetizers from Shondiz and Zaidy’s Deli & Bakery. We are excited to bring a night of dancing, music, and joyful connection to the adults and seniors in the Denver community!
