Recently, we had the honor of gaining a new employee in our ELS…
Sydney Kalin is our new Assistant Director! Alongside Rachel Cram, Sydney will be tackling all the fun and adventure at the JCC in our Early Learning School. We are absolutely jazzed to have her on our team (because, let’s face it, what makes a better ELS Assistant Director than a previous Criminal Justice major?). Kidding, of course (kind of).
Where are you from originally?
Sydney Kalin: I am a Colorado native–I was born at Boulder Community Hospital and grew up in Longmont and Littleton, and moved to Denver in college. I’ve lived in Colorado my whole life–except for 6 months when I lived in Australia when I was 16.
What made you want to work for the J?
SK: I love the idea of being part of a place that values children, families, health, the arts, and community.
What is your background with young children? Have you always wanted to work with kids?
SK: I started babysitting for neighbors when I was 10 years old. In college, I worked with children in residential treatment. After I graduated, I nannied for two amazing families and was inspired to go back to school. In 2009-2010, I participated in the Boulder Journey School Teacher Education Program while I got my teaching license and Masters in Early Childhood Education. I joined the Founding Teacher Team at Denver Green School in 2010, where I taught ECE for 7 years. In high school, I actually wanted to work for the FBI, and my original major in college was Criminal Justice.
What’s a fun talent that not many people know you have?
SK: I always know where people misplace things. My husband calls it my super power–I think he just likes not having to look for his keys–or wallet, or shoes, etc.
What are you looking forward to most as the ELS Assistant Director?
SK: I’m excited to get to know all of the children, families, and teachers.
If you see Sydney’s friendly face in the building, be sure to say hello! She’s a great addition to our staff and we can’t wait to see all she accomplishes in her new role.
