Welcome to your first month into 2018! Have you stayed strong with your health and wellness resolutions through January?
The Fitness & Wellness Center, working in collaboration with the JCC Aquatics Center and Tennis Center here at the J, will be committing to new wellness initiatives throughout the year to provide you, the JCC member, and your families with various fitness challenges, highlighted classes, lectures, awareness campaigns, and special offers to encourage everyone to help in continuing to build the community within our walls. The first of these initiatives will begin in February, focusing on American Heart Month.
Heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the United States among men and women. The Centers for Disease Control state that nearly one half of all Americans have one risk factor for cardiovascular disease, such as high blood pressure, obesity, physical inactivity, or an unhealthy diet
Our goal at the J this month is to help guide you on the path to prevent and/or reduce your risk of developing heart disease by making healthier lifestyle choices through the tools we have at your disposal. We want to make those well-intentioned, short-lived resolutions turn into positive, year-round life changes.
Here’s what you can look forward to for the month of February:
The F&W Center and Tennis Center are teaming up to combine each of the designated 49 cardio-based group exercise classes and the 4 cardio-based weekend tennis drills into this challenge, where the instructor can initial a chamber of our available heart cutouts for those interested in participating. Also eligible will be Treadmill Trekking with a Trainer classes, the designated small and large group studio training classes, and even verified outdoor adventures that can be signed off by personal trainers or management. Every heart that is completed will be placed onto the glass window of the new small group training studio as well as one of the windows in the Tennis Center. All hearts will be entered into a prize drawing at the end of the month that may include a complimentary month for membership either to the F&W Center or the Tennis Center; swag bag; complimentary Personal Training, Pilates, Massage, or Swim Lesson; or a complimentary tennis drill or private lesson! Only 4 winners will be announced, the number of hearts per person entered for the month is unlimited!
National Wear Red Day, February 2
Show your support for women’s heart health and wear red on this day. Doing so, and pointing it out to the Fitness & Wellness Front Desk, the Front Desk Staff will sign one of the chambers on your heart. We recommend you wear a little red and bring a friend to work on your heart health together!
Exercise is Medicine lecture, February 5 & 7

Jared is a former clinical Exercise Physiologist that has taught Health and Exercise Science courses in higher education for the past 10 years. He is looking to restart and complete his Master of Public Health program as soon as he settles into his new role at the J.
