Show-stopping dance numbers. Heartwarming ballads. 70s dancewear. A Chorus Line has it all.
Our Wolf Theatre Academy students at the Mizel Arts and Culture Center are proud to present the musical A Chorus Line on the Elaine Wolf Theatre stage November 30th-December 10th. Directed by Colorado theatre local, Billie McBride, A Chorus Line tells the tale of seventeen Broadway dancers auditioning for spots on a chorus line. An enriching tale about the lives of professional performers, this musical allows audience members to see what it’s truly like to work in the cutthroat entertainment industry.
Revolving around universal issues (failure, judgment, and rejection), the young performers of the WTA are able to tackle and embrace the adult themes and characters of the musical head-on. Emily MacIntyre, the Director of Education for the MACC, says, “Two major musical numbers deal with a look-back at adolescence from an adult’s perspective. These students are actively living and breathing these issues every day. Our students are able to embrace the emotional depth of the adult characters of this show through the lens of current adolescents.” Talented students ranging from 12 to 18 years old take to the stage to showcase their ability to tell the story of Broadway hopefuls with lofty dreams and achy hearts–and they do so brilliantly.
On top of the challenging themes, A Chorus Line successfully strips away the glitz and glam of Broadway life. The musical sheds light on, as Ms. MacIntyre says, “the fact that performers are real people, with real struggles, real broken hearts, and gigantic dreams that may never come to fruition.” While raw and transparent throughout, A Chorus Line manages to evoke a strong sense of hope and instills the timeless notion of love. Love for your friends and family, love for your career, and most importantly, love for yourself.
When asked what she hopes the audience will take away from the performance, Emily says, “I hope they take away a deeper understanding of the theatre being more than flash and glam. So many members of the background chorus are artists whose names we will never know, that are simply incredibly resilient, determined, and passionate performers.”
Our talented students at the MACC conquer this brilliant piece of theatre with the utmost professionalism and style. They’re sure to impress with their dance moves, and they’ll make sure to tug at your heartstrings (be sure to break out the tissues when the performers sing “What I Did For Love”–you’ll thank us later!).
