Meet The Faculty



Cheryl Bankes teaches ceramics at East High School. She has taught in the Denver Public Schools for 22 years, and lived in Denver for 30 years. She holds a B.A. degree from Southern Illinois University.

Timothea Biermann returns for a third summer of creativity at the MACC. She holds a B.F.A. from Maine College of Art, and has also studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Anderson Ranch Art Center and Penland School of Crafts. Her work has been exhibited in Ohio, Iowa and Maine. Timothea currently teaches art at the Slavens School in Denver.

Sandy Early is a professional artist who holds a degree in secondary art education. Our adult students enjoyed her Precious Metals Clay Workshop, and we thought that our teens would find this material as intriguing as they did.

Scott Kinnamon is a Denver based filmmaker and educator who uses film as a tool for engaging and educating teens. He has presented film making programs at the Denver School of Science and Technology, Judi’s House, Hamilton Middle School and at the BNY Mellon Wealth Management Denver Jewish Film Festival. He has also worked with the Green Meadows Farm in Hamilton, MA.

Shelly Mandel returns to the MACC having spent the last year teaching at Arvada Middle School, while working on her master’s degree. Shelly holds a B.F.A. with Education Certificate from Colorado State University. She student-taught with one of our returning favorites, Jenny Werner. Other teaching experiences include Morey Middle School and the Museum of Outdoor Art. A counselor at Camp Shai in 2000 and 2001, Shelly will feel right at home in the Art Academy.

Ann Morgan lives in Denver and has been teaching Art since 1988. She is a certified K-12 educator in Colorado and Arkansas, and has been teaching art and photography to students in the Jefferson County Public Schools for the past ten years. Her work history includes teaching Art at the Arkansas School for the Deaf, Artists-in-Residence in the Littleton Public Schools, and operating a private children’s studio in downtown Littleton.

Chris Pearce grew up in New York City, and studied neurobiology before receiving a degree in experimental film from the University of Colorado at Boulder, where he focused on independent animation. As a professional animator, Chris has made television commercials for Frosted Flakes, Cap’n Crunch and Raid; his animated films and video installations have been shown in festivals and galleries nationally. Chris received his M.F.A. at the University of Florida, and he currently teaches design, animation and filmmaking at the Community College of Denver and the University of Colorado at Boulder

Carol Redmond holds a M.F.A. from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a B.F.A. from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in Halifax. Her work focuses on combining oil painting with mixed media on dimensional wooden supports, and is exhibited in galleries in Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona and Ohio. She has taught art classes for the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Museum of Outdoor Arts and the Greenwood Village Arts-in-the-Schools program. She also has coordinated outreach programs for the Oriental Institute Museum at the University of Chicago.

Jean Smith holds a B.A. in arts and elementary education from Milton College, and she continued her education at several schools including the University of Colorado at Denver, Metro State, Colorado College and Anderson Ranch. She has worked as a substitute teacher in several local school districts, and offered workshops as well. You may have seen her work at CORE: New Art Space, ZIP 37, The Lakewood Cultural Center and the Business of Art Center in Manitou Springs.

Vicky Smith holds a B.F.A. from the University of Colorado at Boulder and a M.F.A. in ceramic sculpture from the Rhode Island School of Design. She has taught at the Rhode Island School of Design, the DeCordova Museum in Massachusetts and at numerous art centers and community schools. Her work has been exhibited at art shows and galleries throughout the country. Vicky is the lead instructor of the MACC’s ceramics program, and is a great teacher of both children and adults.

Betsy Tobin is an award-winning performer and published playwright who moved to Boulder in 1992 and founded the Now or Never Theatre. She previously spent 11 years creating puppets and masks, providing educational and performance activities for adults and children across Europe and the United States. Betsy, who has worked with Young Audiences, the Naropa Institute and the Aesthetic Education Institute at the University of Denver, created large sun, moon and buffalo masks to lead the Procession of the Species Parade in Boulder in 2002.

Jennifer Werner holds a B.A. in psychology with a minor in art education from the University of Colorado at Boulder, and is a longterm member of our summer art faculty. She has taught at the Denver School of the Arts and the Denver Art Museum, and currently teaches art in Denver Public Schools. Jennifer is a member of the Art Students League of Denver and the National Art Education Association, and she holds a Colorado visual arts and elementary teaching certificate. Jennifer is a mixed-media artist, working mostly in glass and collage. Her work is currently in three local galleries and she also participates in summer art shows.

Stan Yan is a Denver-based freelance cartoonist who runs the Squid Works, a local comic book self-publishers cooperative. His work has appeared in countless anthologies, self-publications, comic strips and investment books since 1992. He illustrated the SubCulture comic book mini-series for Ape Entertainment, wrote and illustrated The Tickle Tape daily financial webcomic, and wrote and illustrated his own graphic novel series, The Wang. Stan currently writes and illustrates the Opal - Sales Diva weekly webcomic for New Moon E3O Inc., and currently sits on the board of directors for the Colorado Alliance of Illustrators.
