Once Upon a Mattress is the classic Broadway musical version of the fairytale "The Princess and the Pea" and features music by Mary Rodgers and lyrics by Marshall Barer. A fictional medieval kingdom is ruled by the devious Queen Aggravain and the mute King Sextimus the Silent. No one is allowed to get married until the Prince Dauntless the Drab gets engaged. The Queen makes sure that no eligible ladies will qualify so that she can stay in control. Sir Harry wants to marry his girlfriend, Lady Larkin, so he finds the wacky Princess Winnifred (“Fred” for short) to try her hand at the Queen's test. The Queen decides to give her what she believes to be an impossible test - to sleep on twenty mattresses and be sensitive enough to feel the tiny pea that lies underneath them. The result is both heartwarming and hilarious.

Note that we are performing the G2K (Getting to Know Series) version of the script in which certain plot and musical elements have been simplified for younger actors and the play shortened to one act. Please note that students who sign up for this class must register for Lunch-in for the week of July 28- August 1.

**PREPARATION: It should be noted that no musical experience is necessary to sign up for this production. However, unlike our one-week non-musical workshops which do not require any formal preparation, all students enrolled in Once Upon A Mattress must come to the first day prepared to sing a song from a Broadway musical. Recommendations and further instructions will be provided once you sign up. It should also be noted that students are strongly encouraged to familiarize themselves with the music from the show before the first day of this workshop.
