Camp Shai – Staff

Unlike other summer camp programs, our Camp Shai Directors are year-round, full-time employees of the JCC. Also, many of our counselors and specialists return year after year. These well trained professionals have a passion for working with children and have expertise in creating quality programming so that your child will have fun experiencing new things all summer long! No other day camp can match the caring, experience, dedication and expertise of our talented and hard-working camp personnel. We pride ourselves on hiring, training and retaining top-rate counselors who have a true love for the camp experience. The entire staff, including our professional and spirited Camp Directors, unit heads, and counselors, is trained to provide the highest level of care.

Shlichim (Israeli Emissaries)
In addition to our unit heads, counselors and specialists we are also very proud to host two Shlichim (Israeli Emissaries) at Camp Shai. We believe that it is an important goal for both our campers and staff to learn, teach and identify with Judaism and the State of Israel. We are constantly trying to build bridges between our community and the Jewish community in Israel. As a result, we find the contribution of the Shlichim to be an invaluable step on the way to achieving that goal.
The Shlichim bring with them many prepared activities that they will incorporate into the overall camp program. By simply being at camp and integrating into our community, they provide us with the unique opportunity to learn about Israel and its culture, while we teach them about our own culture and connect in different ways. It is up to us to utilize this wealth of knowledge about Israel and Judaism as much as possible.

We are seeking warm, welcoming families to house our shlichim and be there “home away from home” for this summer. Host families are asked to house shlichim for approximately two weeks. They are responsible for rooming, meals, and transportation to and from camp (although shlichim usually make friends quickly and organize rides with our other staff). This can be a fun experience for you and your family; just think… another smiling face sitting at your dinner table, sharing stories about life in Israel, teaching your children new songs and games and teaching you how to prepare new and delicious Israeli dishes. Your kids will learn to explore differences, discover surprising cultural similarities and gain knowledge of Jewish values through first-hand experiences. You will see our community through the eyes of an Israeli citizen and rediscover the simple things we often take for granted.
