Session 2: June 23rd-July 3rd, 2014 (no camp on July 4th);
Session 3: July 7th-July 18th, 2014,
Session 4: July 21st- August 1st, 2014

Camp Shai is designed to create opportunities that are developmentally appropriate and offer increasing independence to our campers. Our commitment to our Jewish culture and values are evident in all that we do! Campers will enjoy traditional camp rotations, Shabbat Celebrations, Friday Fundays plus innovative chuggim (electives). Each cabin will swim three days a week at the JCC pool.

Bonim campers will be build a Camp Shai schedule that reflects their interests. In addition to rotations of Judaics, art, science, sports, Israeli culture and music they will also get to choose two chuggim (electives) per week. Campers will go on either one field trip or have an overnight at the JCC Ranch Camp per session.

Bonim campers will participate in our rotations of Art, Science, Music, Judaics, Israeli Culture and Sports. They will participate in each rotation once a week.

On any given day our campers will engage in innovative programming. For example you may see them:

    • Creating mosaics or learning to weave in Art
    • Playing Ga-Ga or doing team building games in Sports
    • Cooking falafel or going on an Israeli City Scavenger Hunt in Israeli Culture
    • Having a bridge building contest or making solar pizza ovens in Science
    • Learning a new song or dance in Music
    • Playing games that explore our Middot (values) or learning about upcoming holidays in Judaics

All of our rotations are led by experienced professionals many of whom are teachers and educators during the year. Our rotations provide our campers with a well-rounded and enriching summer experience. Campers get to try new things, acquire new skills and find new hobbies that they will carry with them through-out the school year. Rotations open up new worlds to campers helping them to discover more about the world and themselves.

Bonim campers will have swimming three times a week. At least once a week they will have organized swim games with the JCC’s highly trained swim instructors.

The other days they will have free swim time where they can enjoy our waterslide, play water basketball or an intense game of Marco Polo.

Chuggim (Electives)

Bonim campers will have the opportunity to customize part of their day with Chuggim (electives). They will have two chuggim each week. Each chug will take place for one hour a day. The Chug groups are smaller- generally 5-8 campers and allow them to really delve into a project or explore a subject that interest them.

Our specialists and general counselors bring their interests and talents to the Chuggim to share with our campers. Past Chuggim have included:

    • Ultimate Frisbee
    • Oodles of Noodles: Cooking around the world
    • Hogwarts 101
    • Yoga
    • Simple Machines: Innovate and Invent
    • Kitchen Chemistry
    • Flag Football
    • Culinary Creations: Baking Sweet Treats
    • Beads and Bling
    • Glee
    • Nature Hikes
    • Improv Games
    • Percussion
    • Line Dancing
    • And much, much more!

Chofesh: Free time

Bonim campers will have one activity period a day called chofesh. Chofesh may be the most important part of their day at camp. Chofesh is a period of unstructured time that is child-centered and child-driven. The only rule for chofesh: No one can be excluded

Why is chofesh so important?

“Undirected play allows children to learn how to work in groups, to share, to negotiate, to resolve conflicts, and to learn self-advocacy skills. When play is allowed to be child driven, children practice decision-making skills, move at their own pace, discover their own areas of interest, and ultimately engage fully in the passions they wish to pursue. Play allows children to use their creativity while developing their imagination. Play allows children to create and explore a world they can master. As they master their world, play helps children develop new competencies that lead to enhanced confidence and the resiliency they will need to face future challenges. Perhaps above all, play is a simple joy that is a cherished part of childhood.”
- Kenneth R. Ginsburg, MD. MSEd, author of A Parent’s Guide to Building Resilience in Children and Teens: Giving Your Child Roots and Wings

What will campers do during chofesh?

That depends on the campers, but you may see a group of 1st graders making puppets to put on a puppet show, a group of 3rd graders creating a new version of tag, or a group of 5th graders creating their own scavenger hunt. Since we are not putting limits on what the campers can do, what they come up with will always greatly exceed whatever we imagined them doing.

Field Trips and Overnights

Bonim campers will go on either one field trip or have an overnight at the JCC Ranch Camp per session. Their field trips will take them to places like the Denver Museum of Nature and Science’s Planetarium, Pirate’s Cove or mini-golfing. Bonim campers will have overnights at the JCC Ranch Camp where they will participate in Ranch activities like the ropes course and archery during the day and join the Ranch Camp community for whatever exciting evening activity they have planned. This is a great way to get a taste of Ranch Camp!

Morning Circle

Every morning the whole camp starts together with morning circle. We sing songs, have announcements, recognize birthdays or other milestones and award our “Mighty Middot” (campers who have epitomized our Camp Shai values.)
