The event’s all-star line up includes special guests DeMarcus Ware of the Denver Broncos, sports radio and television personality Les Shapiro, and Master of Ceremonies, former Fox31 News Sportscaster Marc Soicher. Alongside Alterman, students Lauryn Engle and Jordan Sabatier will be inducted into the JCC Maccabi Hall of Fame in recognition of their excellence as JCC Maccabi Athletes. The JCC Sports Hall of Fame is dedicated to honoring Jewish individuals that have distinguished themselves in the field of sports with the objective to foster Jewish identity through athletics. The Jewish Sports Hall of Fame will be permanently located at the JCC Denver, displaying plaques honoring those inducted in several categories, including National Sports, Regional Sports and Maccabi Athlete.
The 2016 JCC Sports Hall of Fame Inductee Leonard “Chink” Alterman (1922-2009) was a member of Denver’s first professional basketball team, the 1948-49 Denver Nuggets. A basketball standout at North High School and DU, Leonard began his love of the game with the Arrows, a “gang” of Jewish boys from the West Side of Denver, who became lifelong friends. He was also an AAU (American Athletic Union) All-American in 1943 and played on the US Army basketball team after serving in WWII. Leonard, a well-loved local businessman, enjoyed sharing stories about his basketball days when he was alive.
Les Shapiro will lead a live, on-stage conversation with special guest DeMarcus Ware of the Denver Broncos. A 12th-year outside linebacker and member of the 2000s NFL All-Decade Team, #94 DeMarcus Ware ranks second among active players and 11th all-time with 134.5 career sacks. He earned his eighth and ninth Pro Bowl nods in his first two seasons with the Broncos (2014-15), giving him the most selections by an active NFL defensive player. Ware, originally from Auburn, Alabama, joined the Denver Broncos in 2014 after spending his first nine NFL seasons with the Dallas Cowboys.
